YORKSHIRE Day is upon us and there are plenty of celebrations going on around York today.

As tradition dictates, members of the Yorkshire Ridings Society will lead a crowd of dedicated folk around the city to read the Yorkshire Declaration of Integrity from the four historic entrances to the city at Bootham Bar, Micklegate Bar, Monk Bar and Walmgate Bar.

The declaration - which asserts Yorkshire’s traditional boundaries - is made in Latin, Old English, Old Norse and modern English - each of the languages used in Yorkshire since its Viking predecessor the kingdom of Jorvik was founded in 875AD.

The Deputy Lord Mayor will also read a proclamation on the steps of the Mansion House at 1pm.

This morning, staff from York’s Chocolate Story are set out to give the statue of Roman Emperor Constantine a ‘reet tasty’ makeover.

The statue, in Minster Yard, has been kitted out in Yorkshire paraphernalia and giant York chocolates by the chocolatier.

York Maze is putting on the style today with its flat cap flinging competition, alongside Yorkshire pudding tossing, straw bale rolling and parkin parking.

It will also host the first appearance of superhero Yorkshireman, who sports a cape emblazoned with a white rose.

Maze owner Tom Pearcy said: “I think he has the potential to take his place alongside Superman, Spiderman, Ironman and the other great superheroes of our time.”

Also this afternoon, Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, is hosting an event to mark the launch of One Yorkshire, a not-for-profit organisation that backs the plan for devolution in the Ridings.

The tea has been organised by MPs Robert Goodwill and John Grogan to bring together councillors, MPs, peers, civic leaders, business people and supporters.

As part of a campaign to promote York, City of York Council (CYC) wants people to share what they most love about the city through its social media channels using #LoveYork and #YorkshireDay
