THIS is the best five-venue pub crawl within York's walls, according the locals and visitors to the city.

We've looked at ratings provided by the public through TripAdvisor.co.uk to find the five venues favoured by drinkers in the city, and provided them here, along with an easy to use map, and links to find out more about each venue.

You might not see some of your favourites on here, and that'll either be because (a) we're only looking the 'bars/pubs' filter, or (b) we're focusing on venues inside the city walls.

That means you'll have to try The Cross Keys (Tadcaster Road), The Fox (Holgate Road), The Punch Bowl (Blossom Street), The Slip Inn (Clementhorpe), and The Carlton Tavern (Acomb Road), on your next crawl. They might be rated more highly than some of the pubs below, but they're all outside the walls - though in some cases only by a few feet, so use that knowledge as you see fit.

Some truly great pubs don't appear on this list - that's because we're working from the pubs/bars filter on the site, which explains the non-appearance of The Maltings (Tanners Moat), among others - we'll do the 'restaurant' filter another day!

As a starting point, we've chosen York Railway Station - so if you're visiting from outside the city, you're set from being dropped off - and if you stick to the route, you'll manage an easy 2.6 miles between bars.

The first port of call after the station is The Drawing Board in New Street. Formerly Blue Fly, The Drawing Board is open for lunch, and is a great central spot to have a bite to eat in preparation for the day's events.

Next up is The Old White Swan in Goodramgate, recently described by visitors as "lovely, warm and cosy", with "a fantastic range of cask ales and beers" and "great service".

From there, it's a short walk along Goodramgate to The Golden Slipper. Very short, in fact - just a few metres. Also good for food, the Slipper is praised by voters as "welcoming", "old school", and "full of character".

By about now, you'll probably need a breath of fresh air and to stretch your legs a bit, so it's lucky that the next pub will give you just that opportunity.

The Phoenix Inn at George Street is in touching distance of the historic walls and was most recently reviewed as "how pubs used to be", "homely", and "the epitome of a good pub".

Lastly, it's another walk to The Old Ebor in Drake Street. Although technically just outside the city walls, we're allowing this as it's a) so historic, b) within spitting distance and c) en-route back to the station, in case you have a train to catch.

Visitors praised the pub's atmosphere, decor and selection, and it was referred to as "a hidden gem", and a "no frills good pub".

From there, it's a short walk back to the station, where - if you've got one left in you - you can wait for your train with a swift drink in the station's York Tap.
