Shocking statistics have revealed that there are at least 320,000 homeless people in Britain.

Anthony Burdett, from West Ewell has set up the organisation; ‘The Big Warm Up’ to help those who unfortunately are sleeping rough. During these cold winter months and extreme weather conditions such as the current Storm Diana the needs of those without a roof over their heads becomes even more acute. This organisation relies solely on donations and volunteers and needs all the help it can get. ‘The Big Warm Up’ is a collection of friends, family and volunteers who all come together to help the homeless every Thursday night in Victoria at 8pm. They operate a street kitchen and feed 80-100 people a week. This amazing organisation hugely helps those who are homeless by acts such as; providing camping gear, toiletries, pet food for those with pets and even haircuts! They also help those who have been homed furnish their new place, to make it as homely and warm as possible.

On asking Anthony why he chose to set up this organisation, he replied that he was inspired by a man he met in London called Mark, who had recently become homeless. When asked if there was a charity who provided sleeping bags to keep him warm through the night helping those in his position Mark told him that there were no organisations he knew of that did so. Anthony later went home and set up a Facebook page with the aim to supply essential items to those who are in need. The best part about the charity according to Anthony is “being able to help those in need and put a smile on people's faces and not only that but to do it in such a fun way.” For anyone wanting to help or donate items from the organisations Wishlist or find out more, please visit their Facebook page ‘The BIG WARM UP Helping the Homeless’.
