Sikh student assaulted in Canada; turban ripped off

In an apparent hate crime, a 21-year-old Sikh student from India was attacked in Canada's British Columbia province by a group of unknown men who ripped off his turban and dragged him across the sidewalk by his hair, according to a media report. Councillor Mohini Singh said Gagandeep Singh's eyes were swollen shut and he couldn't open his mouth.

No relief for man who visited other nations using Indian passport after obtaining Belgian citizenship

The court refused to accept Shah's contention that he had made an innocent mistake. Shah in his plea sought a direction to the Union government to issue him a visa to travel to India or an Overseas Citizenship of India (OCI) card. “If, having obtained Belgian citizenship, he (Shah) still travelled on his Indian passport anywhere, then that had to be a deliberate and conscious act and cannot possibly be a mistake or inadvertence. This is a clear violation of law,” the court said.

Indian-origin woman killed, daughter injured in plane crash in US

Roma Gupta, 63, and her daughter Reeva Gupta, 33, were on board the small plane on Sunday as its pilot reported smoke in the cockpit before crashing near Long Island homes, NBC New York TV channel reported. Roma was killed when the four-seater single-engine Piper Cherokee plane went down in flames as it was returning to the Republic Airport on Long Island from where it had also taken off.

Robbers attack shop in NZ owned by Indian-origin man; flee with cash & cigarettes

On Monday, burglars entered a dairy store owned by Uresh Patel in Kaurilands, a suburb in western Auckland, and ripped the counter and stole cigarettes, according to The New Zealand Herald newspaper. "Three kids came in and one jumped over the counter. Two others came from the other side and grabbed the cash register," Patel was quoted as saying in The Herald.
